Description and Explanation for the Alignment of Alaska ’s Science Performance Standards and Project Wet Lessons

This project was undertaken to provide Alaska ’s teachers with a tool to easily match Project Wet Lessons with the guidelines for science instruction prepared by Alaska ’s Department of Education in June 2005.

The Project Wet Grade Level Recommendations spreadsheet provides a suggested grade level for each lesson. These recommendations are based on direct application of Alaska ’s Science Performance Standards within the lesson’s activities, assessments, and extensions. These recommendations are meant to be guidelines only. Most lessons are appropriate at several different grade levels. The spreadsheet provides a “Brief  Description” of each lesson to assist teachers in matching lessons with their personal classroom curriculums. Some lessons provide adaptations for use with younger (K-2) students. These lessons are listed in the “K-2 Option” column. Finally, the “Alaska Science Performance Standards” column provides information about which standards apply directly to each lesson. The standards recorded in this column are only those which are directly demonstrated in each lesson. Individual teachers can certainly address more of the state standards with their own additions or extensions to the lessons.

The AK State Standards for All Project Wet Lessons spreadsheet lists each lesson and Alaska ’s Science Performance Standards that are directly addressed by each lesson at multiple grade levels.  Each lesson in the Project Wet Curriculum and Activity Guide begins with a recommended grade level  range (inside the blue information box). Lessons and Alaska Science Performance Standards were aligned for each grade level within that recommended range. The science standards listed are only those that are directly addressed by the lesson. Individual teachers can expand the range of science standards with their own additions or extensions to these lessons.

This alignment project was prepared by George Taylor and the Wasilla Soil & Water Conservation District. It is intended to assist Alaska ’s teachers in their efforts to provide quality conservation instruction to their students and to justify those efforts to their districts, directors, and school boards.
